If you’ve seen some of our recent videos on YouTube, I’ve built a couple of GameBoys in metal housings. One was a GameBoy Color, and I made a couple of GameBoy Advances for both of us. Mainly because the Eye was getting one for Christmas and I wanted one as well.

Well, I still have an itch to scratch with my soldering iron! (No, not a literal itch, remember, be very careful when you’re using soldering irons) I’ve made the decision to try and see if I can fix a Game Gear! I’ve ordered a couple off of eBay that are broken, as well as a few games and a power adapter, so I’m going to try and fix them!

Down-side? Ordering all of the components – I’m planning on replacing pretty much every capacitor in the console, so most of the work is going to be making sure the new ones are all good. I’m going to try what people on the internet have said to do, which is replace the Surface Mount capacitors with leaded ones. I’m not 100% sure if that’s the best idea, but we’ll see how it goes! (I have two shots at repair anyway)

I’ll likely update our website (you know, the page you’re on) and our YouTube channel with progress on getting them both fixed! I might even decide to give one away if it works well enough 😀

Keep smiling people 😀
